The Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging at Washington University is funded by contributions from NIA, institutional funds from WU and private donors. In addition, faculty members seek support from charitable foundations and federal/state agencies for specific research projects.
Private donations help us expand programs, recruit outstanding faculty and initiate new programs including seed money for innovative research that pushes the boundaries of knowledge about the aging process and fosters educational and service activities that promote productive aging
Current Programs include:
· Pilot Research Grants: Awards are made for pilot proposals that investigate factors involved in maintaining health and effective functioning in middle and later life. Preference is given to applicants who are new to research or new to aging research and to proposals that have a reasonable likelihood of generating data that will result in applications for external funding.
· Proposal Development Awards: These are small stipends to help a junior researcher develop a project so they may eventually apply for a significant grant to support their research.
· Annual Lecture Series: This is an informative educational event where a nationally recognized leader in the field of aging addresses productive aging issues.
· Maintainance of a Research Office that serves as a clearinghouse for funding opportunities and other aging related information. This office has access to grants management officers and budget coordinators and offers secretarial support for applicatons specializing in aging.
· Ongoing establishment of interdisciplinary "working groups" to develop research initiatives.
· And others
